Altan Urag Rock Band
The Altan Urag is a Mongolian band with the objective of embracing and promoting Mongolian music. Founded in May 2002 along with the members Erka, Chimdee, Gangaa, Oyunaa, Tungaa, Burnee and Erdenetsetseg, Altan Urag aims to meld folk songwriting style with rock backbeat and combine Rock Music with traditional Mongolian music instruments such as morin khuur (horse head fiddle), bishguur (pipe), yochin (dulcimer), ikh khuur (great bass fiddle), guttural throat singing and rock drum beats.
In 2004, Altan Urag was approached to be a Mongolian ambassador for cultural events in Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. Altan Urag gained additional international recognition by participating in the Biennale Bern Arts Festival of Switzerland, Riddu Riddu Folk Music Festival in Norway, Macau International Arts Festival in Macau and Fuji Rock Music Festival in Japan. The number of the festival audiences, where they performed with various professional artists and bands from around the world, varied from 200 to 10.000 people. Altan Urag has also shared tickets with more well-known musicians such as Oasis, Paul Weller, Patti Smith, Lily Allen, Doves, White Lies, Fall Out Boy and Brahman.
Since the formation of their band, Altan Urag has worked on a number of albums; “Foals been Born” in 2004, “Made in Altan Urag” in 2006, “Mongol” in 2007, “Blood” in 2008,”Hypnotism” in 2008, “Nation” in 2010 and “Once Upon a Time” in 2010. Some of the soundtracks of the well-known Mongolian film “Khadak” was also performed by Altan Urag, which was also licensed to be used in “Mongol”, a film directed by Sergei Bodrov, which was presented at several international film festivals. Altan Urag’s second Hollywood licensing deal was Netflix’s Marco Polo, a 10 episode historical drama.
